BC blueberry production to ramp up next week
Some blueberry growers in British Columbia have already started harvesting, though significant volumes are not expected until next week. This marks another early start to the blueberry season, partly spurred on by warm spring weather.
“Harvesting might have started even earlier were it not for about four days of rainy conditions,” said Davinder Punia with A&P Fruit Growers in Abbotsford. “A bit of an early start could be because April was very hot, so the plants were able to make fruit earlier.”
It's too early to tell how the crop will shape up this year, but there are no early warning signs about this year's production or quality. Last season, British Columbia's growers produced 162 million pounds of blueberries, which was higher than the 2014 total of 152 million pounds.
“We've only received berries from a few growers because it's still early,” added Punia. “But I believe we'll be at full scale by next week.”
