New Zealand First has launched a petition at Fieldays 2016, which seeks a Select Committee Inquiry into the performance of MPI Biosecurity New Zealand.
“We need to see if Biosecurity New Zealand has what it needs to do its job properly and to cut through all the bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo,” says Rt Hon Winston Peters, New Zealand First Leader and Member of Parliament for Northland.
“Farming regions like Northland need sound biosecurity when you see first-hand the damage wrought by incursions like Guava Moth and PsA. Just last month, in Australia, they confirmed one of the most destructive cereal pests known to farmers; Russian wheat aphid.
“There seems to be a fatalism when it comes to biosecurity, which is why we’re asking all farmers and visitors to come to the New Zealand First stand in the Bledisloe Building (Site 60) and sign it. Some farming All Black greats did just that yesterday.
“Since last January, we’ve seen fruit fly to black widows in black grapes to a live snake in a Nissan Leaf. The outbreaks of velvetleaf nationwide represents the latest stuff-up in a litany of stuff-ups we cannot afford,” Mr Peters said.
