New species of “bleeding” tomatoes

A new species of tomato has been discovered, Solanum Ossicruentum, and it is very different to the farmed varieties. These tomatoes are from Australia and measure only a few centimetres in diameter. They grow enveloped in spikes, which are used to scratch animals and propagate their seeds.

Researchers cut one of the tomatoes in half to find that within in 5 minutes it’s greeny-white flesh looked like it was bleeding, turning from bright red to dark brown as it reacted with the air. One researcher tasted the tomato and said it was saltier than a normal tomato. It is appropriately named, Ossicruentum is a Latin combination meaning “blood” and “bone”.
