Mexico: Tabasco to export cucumbers to the US and Canada

As part of the plan to promote the agroindustrial sector to avoid being dependent on oil, Tabasco will export an average of 316,008 boxes of European cucumbers per year, which are approximately worth $2,054,052 dollars, to the United States and Canada.

The cucumbers will be produced in the hydroponic greenhouse that will be opened in mid-July in Pablo L. Sidar, where the fruit will also be packaged so that it can be shipped to both destinations by land.

The head of Sedafop, Pedro Jimenez Leon, said: "This is a project of protected and contract agriculture that will be produced in facilities that have top of the line technology. Everything is automated, the opening and closing of windows, the lowering of plastics, and the regulation of humidity and temperature, so that the plants get all the necessary nutrients."

He said producers were guaranteed all of their production was going to be purchased since the beginning of the project.

The cucumber production for the next five years is sold and guaranteed to companies in Canada and the United States.

The project will generate 200 direct jobs, 80 percent of which, about 160, are for women.

Additionally, the facilities could also benefit other farmers in the area, as they could stock and package their fruits there.

Public-private investment
The greenhouse was built with public-private investment from the RYC Solutions company and the secretariats of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Development (Sedafop) and Economic Development and Tourism (SDET).

This is the first company of its kind in the state, and it will have a 4.5-hectare European cucumber production capacity.

Regarding the value of production, the state agency said that there would be two production cycles in 2016, which would amount to a total of 16,980,000 pesos, and that, starting 2017, there would be three cycles which would produce a total of 31,837,000 pesos.
