Spanish garlic sector aims to relaunch garlic in Taiwan

On 1 June, a delegation of the Chamber of Commerce of Yunlin Taiwan and the National Association of Producers and Distributors of Garlic from Spain (ANPCA) signed a memorandum of understanding for the collaboration between the two entities with the goal of encouraging garlic trade.

Taiwan has traditionally been an important destination for Spanish garlic exports, reaching high figures in some campaigns (2,532,000 kg in 2013); however, the volume of Spanish garlic exported has recorded a considerable decline in recent years (358,600 kg in 2014 and 931,400 kg in 2015).

With the objective of relaunching the trade of Spanish garlic in the region, the ANPCA and the Chamber of Commerce of Yunlin Taiwan, represented by their presidents, José Antonio Corell and Kou Chih Yang, signed a collaboration agreement that started with the visit of the business delegation from Taiwan to the largest garlic cooperative in Europe, both in production and trading volume: the Sociedad Cooperativa San Isidro "El Santo", of Las Pedroñeras. The Taiwanese delegation, formed by more than 40 participants, continued with a visit to the production fields of the area, where they had a chance to check the excellent quality of Spanish garlic for this 2016 campaign.

Currently, the ANPCA represents more than 1,800 producers and 47 major marketing companies devoted to garlic in Spain, which together, account for 70% of the country's total production and reached 204 million Euro in turnover last season.
