"Peru: "Demand for organic bananas falls"

After a few months of continuous rainfall and higher temperatures than usual, the crop fields, as could be expected, have been severely affected, but the production of organic bananas in the Peruvian jungle has been recovering gradually. "We had a lot of rain, and due to the moisture, we face the appearance of fungus, which affected our production in the first months of the year. Fortunately, since May, temperatures have normalised and pest control has been a success, so our production is developing as it should," explains Raúl Villa, of Consorcio Agrícola del Norte.

While Peru's organic production has been growing in recent years, the country currently has very few producers of organic bananas, which, unlike in large banana producing countries, domestic competition is relatively small. "There are very few producers of organic bananas in our country, although it is a growing trend. The requirements for a certification are very specific and demanding. We, as a consortium, have had the necessary certifications to export our organic bananas to the world for a few years, but the growth of demand is slow," points out Villa.

"We have a constant production all year round and, at present, the demand for our bananas has fallen sharply, given that the summer holidays are around the corner in Europe, so we still have containers to be exported. Happily, the fruit is sold to the domestic market, and we are confident that, in a couple of months, demand will normalise again," concludes the spokesperson.
