The Chinese bayberry season is starting. The first available varieties, the Biqi bayberry, will be ready to be picked around the 20th of June. After that, the Dongkui variety will come on the market towards the middle of July. Both varieties are grown near Xianju county, towards the East coast of China.
Xianju bayberries are renowned in China for their color, big size and small pits. Mr. Ying further explains: "Dongkui bayberries are the most famous variety, locally, of all the Xianju bayberries. They mostly known for their large sizes; they are almost the size of a ping pong ball."
In order to ensure that consumers across China can purchase Xianju bayberries, the company has developed specialised vacuum packaging. With this packaging, the shelf life of the fresh berries can be extended up to 5 to 7 days. Most shipments are done by air or refrigerated truck transport.
Annual yield of the Junlang Xianju Bayberry orchard is an estimated 25 tons.
