Best Vidalia onion season in recent history

“This year, we’ve had near perfect growing conditions for Vidalia onions,” says John Shuman, President of Shuman Produce. The company grows 2,300 acres of Vidalia onions and this year is the best growing year in recent history. As a result, most Vidalia onions have been trending toward jumbo and colossal size. The company offers a year-round sweet onion program with harvest of the RealSweet® Vidalia® onions starting on April 25. “For the first time this year, all growers and shippers went to market on the same day, creating a lot of excitement and demand throughout the industry,” shared Shuman.

Outside of Vidalia® onion season, Shuman Produce focuses on Peruvian sweet onions from late August through February. The flat, granex sweet onion variety from Texas and Mexico is available beginning late January until mid-March. In addition, organic sweet onions have become an important part of the program as the organics category continues to grow and become more popular.

Hand-harvested
All Shuman’s onions are harvested by hand. From the field, they are moved to packing facilities to be further dried, cleaned, sorted and graded for shipping. Once graded, RealSweet sweet onions are packaged for either bulk or bag distribution. To meet consumer demand, a range of packs and sizing is offered. This includes vertical bags that provide consumers with nutritional information, rotating recipes, and industry facts to connect the consumer to the product. High graphics bins and boxes for displays during peak season complete the selection.
