“Strong potato and onion season 2015/16”

Cultivators who grow potatoes and onions had a good price-making process during the 2015/16 season. Prices during the September-March period were 30 per cent higher than average for potatoes and 65 per cent for onions. Regarding last season potato prices almost quadrupled and onion prices more than doubled. Due to the cold, potatoes and onions were planted relatively late this year, which could turn out favourable for price-making and returns.

Potato price 2015/16 30% above average

Onion price 2015/16 60% above average

Until March the onion export was approximately 7.5 per cent higher than during the same period of last season. At the end of the season, in June, more than one billion tonnes will probably have been exported. The top 5 of export destinations for onions (Senegal, Brazil, Ivory Coast, UK and Malaysia) are good for 50 per cent of all export. The number of markets is still growing, both for potatoes and onions.
