The Minister of Tourism, Manuel Marrero, said Cuba didn't want to compete with Mexico, that they wanted to complement Mexico in multi-destination tourism projects, and offer them investment opportunities.
The Minister said on Wednesday that Cuba was interested in buying lemons from the Mexican state of Yucatan instead of importing them from Chile, as it has done so far.
Marrero's offer was one of several initiatives proposed during the First Mexican-Cuban Business Forum in Merida, Yucatan, which was headed by Mexico's Minister of Tourism, Enrique de la Madrid, and the governor of Yucatan, Rolando Zapata.
"Currently, Cuba has to import agricultural products from countries like Chile, when it would be more convenient and economical to ship them from Yucatan," Marrero said. "For example, you have good citrus and good lemon. Cuba, which is a salinated island, doesn't have a linear production of several agricultural products that you have throughout the year and we have been importing these agricultural products from Chile when you are right here, an hour away from us," he said.
