Fairway to emerge from Chapter 11 -
Fairway Group Holdings said Wednesday it would emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection later this month following court approval of its plan of reorganization. Judge Michael E. Wiles on Tuesday approved the plan in a New York federal court. (supermarketnews.com)

Amazon grocery-delivery service opens in London
Amazon said Thursday its Amazon Fresh food delivery business will now be available to users of its Prime membership plan in central and east London, the first time the service has been offered outside the U.S. Customers will be able to order from a catalogue of about 130,000 items, including those of major high street brands as well as independent local producers. Same-day delivery will be available, allowing shoppers to order at lunchtime for a delivery as soon as 5 p.m. the same evening. The company recently announced a partnership with Wm Morrison Supermarkets Plc. With Amazon Fresh, customers have a wider range of fresh-food options that can be delivered within just a few hours. US: Jet.com to deliver groceries
Jet.com's has decided to test online grocery delivery. The company will deliver fresh food in New Jersey and Washington, D.C., as well as parts of New York City, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. The New Jersey-based jet.com was only launched last July but the business, with a strategy with price at its centre, is seen as a potential challenger to the likes of Walmart and Amazon. Waitrose celebrates a decade in Scotland by doubling suppliers
Since opening its doors in Scotland, in 2006, Waitrose has expanded to seven stores across the country and stocks more than 800 Scottish lines from over a hundred suppliers. In its 10 years in Scotland, Waitrose has doubled the number of Scottish lines it stocks and has also introduced dozens of Scottish producers into distribution throughout the UK. (esmmagazine.com)

US: Door to Door Organics combining with Relay Foods
Louisville’s Door to Door Organics is making a big move to grab a bigger bite of the already well-stocked online grocery market. Door to Door, which delivers organic produce and natural groceries to households in 16 states, inked a merger agreement with online grocer Relay Foods. With Relay Foods, that delivery area grows to 63 markets in 18 states and Washington, D.C., company officials said. Financial terms of the all-stock merger were not disclosed. "This is really about shared learnings, and ramping up our ability to innovate," Chad Arnold, Door to Door's founder and CEO, told SupermarketNews in an interview Wednesday. 

AU: Woolworths in $9 million trouble with the ACCC
The Federal Court has ordered Woolworths to pay penalties totalling $9 million for contraventions of the Trade Practices Act 1974 (now called the Competition and Consumer Act 2010), following admissions made by Woolworths in proceedings brought by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Carrefour opens 'street market' in Madrid
Carrefour has created a new concept with the opening of the Alcobendas Market in Madrid, a 'street market' located along the hypermarket's shopping arcade. This is the second gourmet store that Carrefour has opened. The first one, also located in Madrid, merged fresh and seasonal produce with a wide offer of premium foods. (esmmagazine.com)
