Peruvian avocados

"We need to prevent the fall of our prices"

The Peruvian avocado harvest is currently in full swing, even though a delay of a couple of weeks was recorded in some areas in the north, where only now is the fruit starting to reach the level of dry matter necessary to export. "This delay was caused by the weather conditions, and in some areas, calibres have been smaller, but, fortunately, the quality and volume have not been affected. The campaign's prospects are positive, as Europe is increasingly demanding Peruvian fruit," affirm producers from the north of the country.

A fall in prices is one of the main concerns of southern producers, because oversupply could have a significant impact in this regard. "We are keeping the amount of tonnes that are shipped right now under control to prevent prices from falling too low. Exports for some producers started a few weeks ago and we have to maintain a balance between shipments and production. While we export as private companies, in the end we are also representatives of Peruvian avocados and it is of common interest to maintain a stable market," assert some southern exporters.

"What is noteworthy about this campaign is that demand from other markets has not taken long to begin. For example, now that Mexico has started producing lower volumes and its prices have increased, over the last three weeks the United States has started offering very attractive prices for Peruvian avocados. This is encouraging more producers to consider this an interesting market to ship their exports."
