Ontario greenhouse vegetables nearing peak production

A prolific supply of greenhouse tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers are coming out of Ontario, Canada.

“We are nearing peak production, which will continue throughout the summer. Currently we license over 200 growers who operate over 2,700 acres of modern greenhouses across Ontario,” explained Rick Seguin, general manager for Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers, adding that members also grow a range of other products, such as eggplant, lettuce and strawberries.

Customers, drawn to the taste, texture and consistent quality and supply of greenhouse grown and vine-ripened vegetables, have created a demand that has grown stronger over the last decade.

“Demand has been increasing along with supply of our tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Our products are sold throughout Canada and the mainland United States. We have also begun exporting to Asia,” said Seguin. While cucumbers are available year-round, other products are available from late February through early December of each year.

Pricing on greenhouse vegetables varies
“While retail prices were very high early in the winter, recently farm-level prices have softened considerably,” explained Seguin.

“The controlled greenhouse environment enables growers to grow a uniform product that maximizes yield and quality,” said Seguin, adding that many growers try to balance production and environmental needs.

“Ontario growers embrace new technologies that reduce water use, heating needs and protect the environment. The use of supplemental lighting is becoming more prevalent with growers as the cost of this technology comes down.”
