Northwest cherry orchard update

Cherry harvest is in its second week in the Northwestern part of the US. The May Orchard Update focuses on the current cherry harvest and educates on the unique characteristics of Eastern Washington cherries.

Domex Superfresh Growers cultivate their fruit in an arid climate that averages less than 7” of rainfall per year. With the reduced risk of rain damage, cherries are able to focus their attention on developing maximum sweetness. Superfresh™ cherry orchards receive an abundance of water thanks to the snow pack in the Cascade Mountains that melts in the spring and refills rivers with crisp clear water. This water is transported to the trees via irrigation systems all over the valley.

Domex supply cherries for six to seven weeks due to the diversity of cherry varieties and the staggered harvest dates. Rainier cherries, for example, take a few more days to reach their maximum sweetness compared to Chelan cherries. In addition, orchards placed in higher elevations typically require more time to develop perfect cherries. These two factors allow their harvest dates to be spread out over the months of June and July, ensuring that you’ll be able to enjoy Superfresh cherries all summer long!
