Diego Pérez, Cauquen:

"Argentina: "European market paying great prices for our oranges"

The Argentinian sweet citrus production had an uncertain start because of the impact that the continuous rains may have caused, but ultimately, no major mishaps were recorded, resulting in a production that has met the sector's prospects. "The floods didn't take a toll on the production of sweet citrus, and the quality hasn't been affected either. Moreover, the demand for Argentinian oranges is very good at the moment, mainly from Europe, Russia and Canada," affirms Diego Pérez, of Cauquen.

"Although prices in Russia have fallen due to the holidays, the European market is offering better prices than last year. At the moment, we are receiving 11 dollars for a 15 kilo box of oranges and 10 dollars for every 10 kilos of mandarins, but it is still uncertain how the season will end, as competition with Peru and South Africa is still very strong, given that we started the season at around the same time. In any case, there's enough market for everyone," assures Pérez.

Also, the agreement between the United States and Argentina for the export of lemons to this market should be signed later this year. If all goes as expected, this agreement would have consequences also for sweet citrus in the near future. In this sense, the 2017 campaign is considered the right time to start negotiating agreements for these fruits.
