Jiangsu Province
"Affected by extreme weather in the beginning of this year, the yield of Pizhou garlic has slightly decreased. To be more precise, garlic output of Jiangsu Province is expected to fall around 10%. Our cooperative grows garlic on 35 hectares. Per hectare, one average, a farmer could harvest 19,500 kilos of garlic this season. On the bright side, the quality of the product is better than in previous seasons. The garlic is firm and had a spicy taste. Our crop is also larger than usual, we even had a 9 cm clove."
"This year, garlic prices have soared. Transactions are still relative little, as growers are waiting for the price to rise even higher. Smaller growers, however, are likely to sell their crop by the middle of August, due to limited storage facilities." In comparison to other garlic growing areas such as Shangdong and Henan province, garlic from Jiangsu is normally processed before selling to the market."
"Garlic is the best source of income for our growers. Only by improving the return on investment, can we encourage more people to continue to grow. Therefore, we are currently promoting the garlic export while developing garlic deep processing projects. With these projects we hope to boost our garlic output and sales volume.
