Taiwanese limes competitive on Chinese wholesale market

Production of limes is relatively limited in Mainland China. There is some production in Sichuan province, but very small compared to the local lemon production. Most limes are grown in Taiwan.

In Taiwan, the main lime growing areas are located in Pingdong and Taizhong. Main lime varieties include the Four Season lime, Perfume Lime and the Taiwan lime. Limes are available throughout the season, but the peak season falls between June and August, and November and December. Thanks to the country's unique marine climate, Taiwan limes are very consistent in size, and have a unique fragrance and acid level.

Mr. Su, a lime importer from China, explains: "currently, the Sichuan lime in the market is only available in bulk packaging, in boxes of 15 to 20 kilograms. Taiwan limes are sold in 12 kilo boxes, which is making the product more competitive. Our products, for example, are very suitable for juice stores. The wholesale price now hovers around 14 to 16 Yuan (1,80 euros) per kilo."
