Mexico: Puebla seventh largest national avocado producer

According to information from the delegation of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) in Puebla, the entity is the seventh biggest producer of avocado nationwide.

The 2,408 hectares devoted to avocado crops in 43 municipalities of Puebla produce 15,519 tons of avocados.

The avocado is considered a crop that supplies the domestic and international's market's consumption needs.

Marketing channels depend on the product's characteristics and qualities; that is to say, it can be marketed through traditional channels (markets, greengrocers) or modern channels (supermarkets, convenience stores, etc.).

The avocado is considered a perennial product because it is grown throughout the year. The temperature needed to cultivate avocado ranges from 17 to 24 degrees Celsius. The ideal temperature for it to reach its optimal development is about 20 degrees Celsius.

Puebla is working with producers to achieve being recognized as an area free zone of avocado bone borers, a requirement to export, by conducting integrated management activities to control it in the regional areas.
