Mexico: Watermelon delayed in Laguna de Durango

The watermelon harvest was delayed for several weeks because the hailstorm that took place in the region of Laguna region some days ago affected the fruit that was ready, rendering it useless. As a result, the first cuts will take place between June 20 and 25.
The Watermelon Product System is working with about 30 to 35 producers at La Laguna de Durango, 10 of these producers have contract farming agreements with retail chains nationwide.

These producers have 35 hectares of the 120 total hectares that the producers within the system have, said the chairman, Jesus Alejandro Pereda Herrera.

The contract farming schemes assure producers get a base price, which still hasn't been established as they won't be the first to harvest the product. These 10 producers should be starting the harvest in the first week of July, a date by which they should start negotiating the price they will be paid for their product.
