Apple test to prove 1-MCP treatment
1-MCP slows down maturation of apples and is therefore used to improve their shelf life and to protect them against adverse effects of ethylene. 1-MCP is applied in storage to maintain quality of recently harvested apples. 1-MCP application, however, is sometimes not wanted or even not allowed. Organically grown fruit, for example, should never be treated with 1-MCP. But how can you see the difference?
The FreshNSure test is based on measurement of gene activity changes due to 1-MCP treatment, as a result of which NSure is able to prove whether 1-MCP has been applied or not. Although 1-MCP leaves no residue, still after months in storage the effect of treatment can be measured. The test can be used worldwide and is applicable for the cultivars Gala, Red Delicious, Fuji, Granny, Elstar, Jonagold and their clones.
The sample should be taken out of storage, or within 14 days of shelf life. You only need to apply a few drops of juice (generated from 15 apples) on provided FTA-card to have a batch of apples tested. After processing the card in our laboratory, the test result is expressed in ‘not treated’ or ‘treated’.
The FreshNSure test can be performed on apples after 3 months in storage.
