Spain: 65,364 tonnes of bananas available in March

In March 2016, the Canary Islands shipped 42,134 tonnes of bananas to mainland Spain, while imports from Africa and Latin America amounted to 26,905 tonnes and re-exports reached 3,675 tonnes, so Spanish consumers had access to about 65,364 tonnes of bananas. This is around 13,617 tonnes more than in the previous month, representing an increase of 26.3%. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in Spain has fluctuated between a minimum of 35% and a maximum of 41%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in March were Costa Rica, with 6,480 tonnes, Ivory Coast, with 5,201 tonnes, and Colombia, with 4,605 tonnes, which together accounted for 61% of the total volume. Moreover, Costa Rica, with 2.9 million Euro, and Colombia, with 2.5 million Euro, were the main suppliers in terms of value, accounting for about 63% of the total.

In the first three months of this year, shipments from the Canary Islands have exceeded 106,022 tonnes, imports from Africa and Latin America have stood at 71,578 tonnes and re-exports have reached 13,300 tonnes, so the available supply has amounted to 164,300 tonnes, 32,925 more than in the same period of 2015. Their market share has fluctuated between a minimum of 35% and a maximum of 44%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in the first three months of the year were Costa Rica, with 18,027 tonnes, Ivory Coast, with 16,076 tonnes and Colombia, with 11,038, which together accounted for 63% of the total volume. Moreover, Ivory Coast, with 10 million Euro, Costa Rica, with 8.9 million and Colombia, with 6.1 million Euro, were the leading suppliers in terms of value, accounting for about 61% of the total.
