Spain: Plátano de Canarias reaches 76% market share

The consumption of Canary bananas in Spanish households in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands exceeded 34,800 tonnes in April, representing 76.3 percent of the total consumption recorded in the banana market, which amounted to 45,700 tonnes.

This development of consumption in April meant an increase of 0.6 percent compared to March, according to data provided by Kantar Worldpanel and the Association of Banana Producer Organizations of the Canary Islands (ASPROCAN) to the Ministry of agriculture, Food and Environment.

April's results also bring the market share of Canary bananas above 75% for the first quarter. When it comes to value, this figure rises above 80%.

ASPROCAN has stressed how important it is to exceed a 50% market share at national level, as it shows that the product is appreciated by consumers.

The Association considers that the promotional work carried out by the Canary banana sector to differentiate the product and boost trade cooperation with distributors and retailers has been a key factor behind the increase in the demand for Canary bananas, despite the difficult conditions faced by the product because of competition from bananas from third countries.
