Switzerland:

Rain complicates new potato harvest

In almost all regions the soil is saturated with water, and according to Swisspatat this complicates the potato harvest. The quality of the first Swiss potatoes is satisfactory, even though the harvest will be rather small in the coming weeks.

Since Pentecost the new thin-skinned potatoes can be harvested in the western and eastern part of Switzerland, despite the difficulties. According to Swisspatat, the Swiss potato industry organization, the potatoes have grown very well and the harvest in Seeland can start next week.

Low yield
“The quality is good, but the short shelf life of new potatoes is a challenge," said Swisspatat in their statement. Therefore an increase in the sales volume is only expected after the start of the regular potato harvest. But the planning of the harvest still has to be agreed upon with the buyers.
