Maurice Ott, Simba Vegetables:

"Exceptionally high prices of red cabbage"

The prices of red cabbage have been exceptionally high this year. This was said by Maurice Ott of open ground vegetable trading company Simba Vegetables from Zwaagdijk. "The prices of red cabbage are around 0.90 Euro per kilo at the moment, so this is serious money. There is demand throughout Europe. The stocks are running out quickly. There is still between 1,000 and 1,400 tonnes of red cabbage available and we are selling around 80 tonnes per day in the Netherlands collectively, so we can hold out until the new red cabbage is available in around four weeks."

"The availability of the white cabbage on the other hand is much larger and the prices are currently dropping towards a kilo price around 15 cents for the coarser sizes. There are quite a lot of large cabbage growers who have waited until the end of the season and it's a shame for them that the price is now decreasing," continues the open ground vegetable trader.

The season of white cabbage will last longer than the red cabbage, as the first new white cabbage isn't expected for another 6 or 7 weeks. "Whether the market will get a revival is largely dependent on the demand from England and Ireland. Hopefully they will really need white cabbage in June, otherwise a price revival will be difficult," concludes Maurice.
