"A milestone"

New container rail link between Antwerp and Venlo

On May 23 a new container rail link was started between the port of Antwerp and the North Limburg Venlo. The new rail shuttle is of extra importance to the port of Antwerp, which is increasing its intermodal supply at this important logistical region. Two years ago barge operator Danser/BCTN with a set weekly inland service between Antwerp and Venlo.

The rail shuttle service is a communal project between the Havenbedrijf Antwerp, the rail goods specialist Cabooter Railcargo from Venlo and the German inland port Duisburg. The train will leave from quay 1700 on the Deurganck dock in the Antwerp port 4 times per week, towards the Cabooter rail terminal in Venlo. "For Venlo, the number one logistical hotspot in the Netherlands, the port of Antwerp is a strategic partner. This new rail connection is a milestone for our region," says Hans Cabooter.

Supply chain
The Antwerp port has had a record year. 2015 was closed with over 208 million tonnes of traded goods. The first quarter of 2016 also started strongly, with outspoken figures on the treatment of containers and fluid bulk. Thanks to the 2M alliance of MSC and Maersk, which resulted in more visits from the Far East, showed the import figures in Antwerp increase further.

The supply chain approach is more central than ever in Antwerp: the countless goods have to not only be treated efficiently in the port, they also have to find their way to the hinterlands in a reliable and fast way. Being able to offer sufficient intermodal connections is crucial to this.

Connection with natural hinterland
Venlo is one of the most important logistics hotspots in Europe. Multinationals such as Viking, Arrow, Nutricia, Canon and Tommy Hilfiger use Venlo as a distribution hub. In previous years the region was strongly unlocked intermodally, with the extension of rail and barge terminals that mainly serve the port of Rotterdam. Two years ago this changed, with the start of a container barge service between Venlo and Antwerp. The start of a new rail connection makes the intermodal supply between both regions, two cargo generating regions in the heart of Europe, even more complete. The improvement of the intermodal supply should help improve the market share of Antwerp in its natural hinterland
