Serbian raspberry production on par with last season
"Everything looks good so far for the 2016 raspberry season. The weather has been warmer so it looks like the season will start earlier, at the beginning of June. Raspberry production areas have been expanding into new growing areas which is why larger volumes are expected despite some setbacks due to bad weather." said Jelena.
The wet weather last month had more of a impact on strawberries because there was not enough sun and the brix level remained low which meant that they were missing the desired level of sweetness.
"We are expecting warm sunny weather in June and if this goes to plan, the raspberry crop should be able to improve and have the time to develop a sweeter fruit. Some of the blossoms were damaged by the snow, but growers were quick to respond and most were successful in saving their fruits."
The silver lining last month was that despite the wet weather, the cold temperatures prevented the chance for mold to develop, which had the potential to create even larger problems for growers.
Europe is Master Frigo Fruits's main market, but they also work with Japan, and have had their eyes on other countries such as Australia and the US. However, they continue to focus on Europe, with extra attention to the Scandinavian countries and France, where demand for raspberries is high.
