Savasun South Africa kicks off citrus season

Savasun South Africa is a subsidiary of Staay Food Group, which they established in Cape Town back in 2011. The branch focuses on sourcing citrus, grapes, apples, pears and exotic fruit for Staay Food Group. In addition to sourcing, Savasun South Africa also organises visits for European supermarket organisations to their regular suppliers. At the moment, the focus is mainly on the current citrus season.

Staay Food Group suppliers meet high quality standards and have all the relevant certificates. Sustainable and Social entrepreneurship are of great importance to them and their suppliers. In addition to conventional oranges, Staay Food Group will also market a considerable volume of Fair Trade produce. They visit their suppliers regularly to ensure transparent communications and close collaboration. They also have various growing locations in South Africa to ensure sufficient supply volumes of high quality citrus fruit throughout the season.

Citrus kick-off
Two weeks ago the first satsumas arrived, followed by the clementines and lemons. This week the first navel oranges will arrive. The drought has meant that the volume of navels is somewhat lower than last year. All in all, the South African citrus growers and Savasun South Africa are positive about the 2016 season. They expect to harvest some 111 million boxes weighing in at 15 kg each. This is slightly lower than in the past few years due to the dry weather conditions.
