XLnT Citrus to release Samba mandarin in South Africa
A new mandarin cultivar is about to be released to South Africa citrus growers. Key traits include exceptional flavour and colour, time of harvest, low-seeded when not cross-pollinated, favourable fruit size, and ease-of-peeling.
The XLnT Citrus company and Dr. Graham Barry will be releasing Samba mandarin within the next few weeks. Samba mandarin is an early-mid maturing mandarin hybrid with maturity immediately after that of Nova mandarin, and has an exceptional flavour and colour. Peelability is between that of Clementine and Nova, and size range is predominantly from 50 to 64 mm (calibres 2, 3 and 4; ±100 to 110 grams per fruit).
Selected citrus growers, nurserymen, exporters and other industry stakeholders have been invited to the interactive discussion and launch of Samba mandarin to the South African citrus industry.
Samba’s fruit characteristics and flavour profile lend itself well to most export markets – both Western and Eastern tastes.
