Les Paysans de Rougeline open their new eco-greenhouse
Les Paysans de Rougeline’s Director, Gilles Bertrandias, proudly opened their 4 hectare eco-greenhouse on the 20th May in Lapouyade (Haute Gironde). The greenhouse is for vine tomato production, and will run off biogas (from the Veolia rubbish dump). The first tomatoes have been in production since March.
Mr Bertrandias explains that the project was launched four years ago and has already created 30 job opportunities in Lapouyade, with more to come. Four new hectares of greenhouses will be created, and production will go from 2,500 tons to 5,000 tons of tomatoes by 2017. Locally, this will create 56 job openings. The President of the region says that “The best way to create employment is through agriculture, one hectare of greenhouse is 10 jobs, that is why, with the region, we have committed to a greenhouse plan; we also have a project in Limousin and Poitou-Charentes”.
The greenhouses are almost entirely organic, as they don’t need treating. The Paysans de Rougeline have created a real economical model. The tomatoes are growing well without treatment, with plenty of light.
