"We see opportunity in Northeast China"

Taiwan sweet potato grower trying to enter China

"We are one of the few companies growing sweet potatoes in Taiwan. We are steadily growing in size and sales volumes. Our market reach has also been extended," says Mr Hui Chui Yi from Babatata.

"We grow yellow, purple and red sweet potato varieties. Because of the extreme cold in February our crop output has been diminished by 10%. Market prices have remained rather flat compared to last year, hovering at around 2.5 USD per kilogram."

"30 percent of our products are sold on the domestic market. The majority of 70% are exported to Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. We have our own packing facilities and run our own logistics train. Most of our products are shipped over by sea. A small amount we transport by air. There is great potential for us in overseas markets."

"After Singapore and Hong Kong we are now trying to open the market in Northern China. For us, the biggest obstacle entering the Chinese market is the higher market price our products have compared to Chinese products. We target the Northern part of the country, as local production is less. In the future we hope to be able to expand our export even further."

"We have been growing our market share on the Taiwan market as well. We started to supply the 7-Eleven supermarket chain, and our sales have been gradually increasing. Agriculture in Taiwan is monitored by the government and there are strict standards on the use of fertilizers and other crop enhancement products. This is why we can deliver a steady quality."
