US(CA): Sluggish prices for strawberries
The market for strawberries from California has been slow lately, as demand has been light. But shippers hope the coming week will see a bump in prices as retailers start to promote berries for the summer.
“Prices are not quite where we'd like them to be at this point in the season,” said Charlie Staka from CBS Farms in Watsonville, California. “Demand is on the quiet side for this time of year, so we'd like to see that pick up.”
Because of light demand, prices have remained low. On May 20, prices for a flat of medium and large strawberries from Watsonville were between $8.00 and $10.00, and prices for a flat of berries from Santa Maria were between $8.00 and $9.00. But summer is when berries really get going, so Staka is optimistic the market will improve.
“Summer is when there are more retail ads and when we tend to move a lot of berries,” said Staka. “There should be some good ads coming up, so we expect things to pick up with better retail pricing next week.”
