The Institute of Agricultural Marketing (IMA) said Panama had postponed importing 15,000 quintals of onion from the United States, which had been authorized by the Minister of Agricultural Development, Jorge Arango, because the national production was faring well.
According to the IMA, onion production, specifically the Nata onion, from Cocle, has been so good that they decided to take this measure to avoid affecting the marketing of the national product.
On Monday 23, the potato and onion food chain will present a report regarding the production volume of the onion to see if the country will need to import more onions.
Virgilio Saldaña, president of the Association of Producers from the Highlands, said that putting the domestic producers before imports was good because it encouraged them to continue harvesting to supply the country.
A month ago, the country had a shortage of supplies because it had exported 4,000 quintals of onions to Puerto Rico and 14,000 quintals to Costa Rica.
