Leye chili sales pick up, with potentially higher yields this year

Late last year, chili growers from Leye Town in Huize County (Yunnan province) had a very good harvest, but a bad market situation. Due to the increase of chili growers in the surrounding areas, the local chili price started to drop from 18 Yuan per kilo to 14 Yuan.

The good news is that the situation started to change as of this April. The chili sales are significantly better, and their price has risen back to 18-20 Yuan per kilo. The chili growers have sold out of all their stocks. Mr. Yu from Leye town said: "Because the local farmers have become accustomed to the cultivation of chili this year, they will continue to grow and probably with higher plantation area due to the good market situation. Moreover, through the effective publicity last year, Leye chili is well known by the distributors in China. Therefore, their sales will not be an issue of concern.

Leye chili has a moderate spicy level, and high level of pigment, and they can produce very good flavors when cooking. The majority of chili is ground into powder. Last year Leye town produced a total of 20 million kilos of chili. If local growers decide to expand their plantation area, it is expected the yields will also increase accordingly.
