AU: Citrus grower teams up with nursery for better trees

There is great demand for citrus trees in Australia, in some cases growers can wait up to two years for root stock. One of Australia's biggest citrus producers, Seven Fields has teamed up with Mildura Fruit Nursery to increase their supply of root stock and trees.

Richard Byllaardt from Sevenfields said that by working together with Mildura Fruit Nurseries they can get a faster and a more consistent supply of trees.

"We peel seed coatings using special techniques, they take around 3-5 days to germinate instead of 3-5 weeks when unpeeled, this method also gives a straight root and shoot," explains Danny Thornton, Director at MFN.

Much of the work done at the nursery is experimental and very innovative.

They currently have the capacity to grow 90,000 plants per season. 18 months is the optimal growing time before the tree goes to the grower, this does depend on the root, variety and grower.
