Greece: Normal to good garlic season expected so far

According to Konstantinos Mirtsidis, owner of the company Mirtsidis, specializing in the production, packaging and marketing of garlic. "The product was expensive in Greece during Easter, as there was no local or Spanish production. Chinese and Argentinian garlic reached very high prices (up to €4/kilo), but now we are starting with our own crops, which will arrive in about 20 days.”

In terms of quality, he affirms that the hot winter may cause some issues, but nothing too significant. “If the quality is good, I think there will be good demand for local garlic in Greece, but this is something we’ll see one month from now. The main harvest period will last from 1 to 20 June and then another 20 days to dry the garlic. Overall, I believe it will be a normal to good year,” he affirms.

He explains that this situation is quite different to last year, when 30 to 40% of the production was destroyed by floods. “This year, I think the damage won’t exceed 10 to 15%, although that will also depend on the weather.”
