Ossman Tovar Román, Aztecoco:

"A natural container for coconut water"

The Mexican brand Aztecoco has patented a very natural way to drink coconut water, which it presented recently at the fair CPMA, in Canada.

"We grow dates in Mexico and also fresh coconuts in Mexicali, in Baja California. We started the business about three years ago and, in the beginning, we marketed coconut water in Tetra Briks; that was our main activity. Recently, however, we have developed a new way to pack the product which is much more natural," explains Ossman Tovar Román, of Aztecoco.

The company has patented a process which consists of placing a bottle cap on the coconut and has developed the necessary technology to make it possible to consume the product directly from the fruit.

They finalised the patent last November and Tovar explains that the CPMA fair was the stage chosen for its presentation. "The response from the stand's visitors has been really good; we never expected it would be so positive," he acknowledges.

In fact, he explains that, due to the magnitude of the response, it will become necessary to change the production process at its plant in Colima, because now its main product is no longer coconut water in Tetra Briks, but in this new format. "We also need new technology. We have developed a new machine to make our work easier," he adds.

It is still unclear what the export volume will be, but Tovar expects the shipment of four trucks to the United States and one or two to Canada per month. Shipments to Europe will be done by sea and will start around July. The summer is just around the corner and I believe demand will start growing," he concludes.
