Peru: Exports of cape gooseberries increase by 161%

Between 2013 and 2015 exports of cape gooseberries increased by 161%, thanks to the identification of new market niches, major presentations, and the training of the entire value chain, in which small producers have a leading role, said Sierra Exportadora.

Last year, Peru exported 1.8 million dollars in cape gooseberries to 34 markets, i.e. 15% more than the 1.5 million it exported in 2014 and the $687,341 in 2013.

The four main destinations were the Netherlands, Germany, the United States, and Canada, which accounted for 73% of total exports. Other markets were France, Japan, South Korea, which has great potential, the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Chile, among others.

Sierra Exportadora will hold four international seminars analyzing the global outlook for demand in at least four different regions, so as to make the Peruvian berries boom sustainable.

The first seminar will be held in La Libertad on May 9 and 10, the second in Piura, on May 10, the third in Junin (Huancayo), on May 11, and the fourth seminar will be held in Arequipa on 13 May.

In 2015, Peru mainly exported dehydrated organic cape gooseberries, canned cape gooseberries, and cape gooseberries covered in chocolate, in syrup, as a jam, nectar, and pulp, among others.

57 companies performed the shipments, among which highlight Villa Andina SAC, Peruvian Nature & S SAC, Agroandino SRL, Algarrobos Organicos del Peru SAC, Danper SAC, Andino Industrias SAC, Naturandina del Peru SAC, and Ecoandino SAC.

The main cape gooseberry producing regions are Cajamarca, Ancash, Junin, Ayacucho, Huanuco and Cuzco.
