Honduras ready to export melons to Japan

The Honduran melon sector is getting ready to export its melons to the Japanese market, after the country was certified to do so, which opens the doors to other markets in Asian countries such as Taiwan and Korea, stressed the Ministry of Economic Development (SDE) on Tuesday.

The head of this Ministry, Arnaldo Castillo, stated that Honduras already complied with the required phytosanitary measures, produced a melon of excellent quality, had achieved opening a space on the Asian market, and would be dispatching the first containers in the coming days.

During a visit to cultivation sites in the southern zone of the country, Castillo reiterated his support for the sector and said the entrepreneurs of this sector had been a determining factors to achieve the certification for melon exports.

He said that Japan annually imported about 1,000 million dollars in melon, watermelon, and papaya and that Honduras would have the opportunity of exporting between 300 and 400 containers of fruit per year to this market.
