Chinese market now open to all US apple varieties

North Bay Produce first Red Delicious to arrive in Shanghai

“This year, China and the US have signed an agreement that the US can now supply 100% of all apple varieties to China from all states. We are proud to announce that we will be the first company from the US that will supply China with apples that are grown in the East of USA, specifically from the state of Michigan” says Eric Olshove of the American growers collective North Bay Produce.

“We have one container at sea now, which we expect to arrive in Shanghai around the fifth of May. We are very happy about this shipment. Last year we stored a special selection of our Red Delicious apples with the aim of exporting them to China this Spring. The apples will be sold at the Huizhan wholesale market in Shanghai, where we work with a local import company.”

Sweet Red Delicious
"The apples that we sent are our Red Delicious apples from Michigan. This year, we sampled the market in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. We organised a number of blind taste tests, during which we tested Red Delicious and some other Eastern grown varieties. These varieties were well received but it seemed that the Red Delicious created much excitement because our Reds taste better than those from Washington. We believe that our apples can do well in China, as the Chinese tend to like sweet flavor. Our Red Delicious is not as sweet as the Chinese Fuji apple, but our apples tend to have more flavor than other USA grown Red delicious and looks appealing too. Our customers will experience an apple that is a bit different than they are usually buying from Washington."

"The differences come mostly from our unique climatic growing regions here in Michigan. We are surrounded by the largest fresh water lakes in the world and have good Nutrient Rich soils. Additionally our weather is cooler in summer which is good for growing apples naturally."

“Our President Mark Girardin and Chairman of the Board Tom Gee will travel to Shanghai to be present when the container clears. We will be there to introduce the apple to the market and to learn about how it is received. The best that can happen is that our Chinese customers fall in love with the taste of our apples, and realise that we grow something that is different.”

North Bay Produce
“Our company started as a grower’s cooperative in Michigan. Originally we specialised in blueberries and apples and other locally grown produce. These are still our biggest products, but today we are an internationally owned and operated company. We have farms located all over the Americas, in South, Central and North America. We have 32 farms located in countries like Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico and the US. Most of our apples come from Michigan, which we can supply all year round. We grow blueberries in every region of North and South America. Besides blueberries, we also grow raspberries, blackberries, asparagus, snow peas and sugar snaps, citrus, mangoes and we have become the largest pomegranate grower in the Southern hemisphere.”
