Teresa Carpresana, of Caster:

"The Mexican mango production has been up to our expectations"

The Mexican mango campaign started about a month ago for the company Caster, which produces mangoes for export, as well as papayas and bananas for the Mexican market.

Besides Mexico, the company is present in the United States with a distributor in New York. Its current export markets are the US and Canada. Five years ago, they also exported to Europe, specifically to the German market; however, they had to stop, as they didn't have a good sales representative, although the company does not rule out going back in the future.

Caster grows the varieties Ataulfo, Kent and Tommy Atkins. "The mango season kicked off a month ago. Normally, the price depends on supply and demand in the US. There is not much production in Mexico at the moment, so prices are really high," explains Teresa Carpresana, of Caster. For now, the production has met the campaign's initial prospects.

The producer adds that El Niño has slightly affected their production, although not too much, as the company works in different parts of Mexico. "The season starts in the state of Chiapas and comes to an end in Nayarit," she points out. "There is not a great production in Chiapas, but in Oaxaca, Guerrero and Nayarit it is quite good."

"We currently have a packer certified to export mangoes to the US. It could also become certified to export to Europe in the future," concludes Ms Carpresana.
