Kees Schouten, Aardappelhandel Altena:

"Not that many Malta's, but supply is leaving quickly"

Aardappelhandel Altena from Wijk en Aalburg has had a supply of the early potatoes from Malta for over a month now. The drought has had big consequences for the harvest. "The supply isn't great, but the volume that is coming in is leaving quickly," says Kees Schouten.

"The Santé variety is almost gone and we are now mainly on the Alpha's. The quality of this potato is good. This is why I hope more arrive. At other times the new harvest in the Netherlands put pressure on the market, but due to the cold weather this isn't the case. Besides this the supply from southern countries is also a lot less," continues the potato trader.

He also doesn't expect the prices of the Malta potatoes to drop any time soon. "They won't get the chance, as they're gone before you know it. There are always customers for potatoes from Malta, the Alpha's are particularly popular in the Netherlands," says Kees. Altena mainly sells the Maltese potatoes to (potato) wholesalers and supermarket chains.
