South African grape season draws to a close

UK biggest winner in exports

Hex River is the last region in South Africa still packing grapes and with an expected total of nearly 18.5 million, 4.5kg equivalent cartons, this will be the second biggest harvest since deregulation.

As far as exports go, total exports so far are down by 2.28 million cartons on last year. This was as expected due to to the extreme heat in the growing regions. Volumes would have been lower had it not been for additional planting coming into production.

Most export destinations saw a reduction in cartons shipped with the exception of the UK which received 1.7 million cartons more than last season. This was because of market circumstances and a slightly better exchange rate with the rand/pound than other currencies.
