US(CA): Almond acreage up

The 2015 almond acreage report put out by California's Department of Food and Agriculture estimates an increase in the state's almond acreage over the totals from 2014. The six percent jump would put 2015's acreage at 1,110,000 acres, with 890,000 bearing acres and 220,000 non-bearing acres. Bearing acreage for 2016 is estimated at 900,000 acres.

Five counties are expected to produce the majority of the state's almonds. Fresno, Kern, Stanislaus, Madera and Merced counties are expected to produce 73 percent of the state's almonds. The most popular variety continues to be the Nonpareil, and the four other leading varieties are the Monterey, Butte, Carmel and Padre.
