US(WA): Cherries coming early on West Coast

California's cherry harvest got off to a quick start this season, with picking taking place about 10 days sooner than normal, and significant volumes are also expected for the first part of the season. But California isn't the only state off to an early start this year. In the Pacific Northwest, this year's bloom suggests an early start for cherries from Washington.

“For cherries, it remains to be seen what kind of set we'll have, or the sizing or the quality,” said Steve Lutz with Columbia Marketing International in Wenatchee, Washington. “But from what the bloom looks like, it indicates a pretty good crop.”

Warm weather this spring brought on an early bloom, and if there's no inclement weather in the coming weeks, then harvesting should begin sooner than usual.

“The bloom is early this year by about a week,” said Lutz. “That's ahead of what's normal, but it's not as early as last year's season, which was very abnormal.”
