Peru: Piura second biggest national exporter of table grapes

Piura became the second major exporter of table grapes nationwide after exporting 100,000 tons of the product. Ica ranks first with 140,000 tons and Lambayeque ranks third with 25,000 tons, as was revealed in the XX Table Grape International Symposium North Siuva 2016.

This important event was inaugurated by the regional governor of Piura, Reynaldo Hilbck Guzman, who stressed the importance of this Symposium.

"We shipped the first 14 containers with grapes for export in 2007. Our progress show that we took the right decision, which stirred up the market in Piura," he said.

"There’s no guild uniting us in Piura, but it is important to coordinate and manage particular points, get support, and maintain productivity, i.e. a higher income. The market is another issue because we have to go to the free trade agreements, as well as to Korea and China. We need to look for more markets. We can’t rely on just one, there should be diversification," he added.

"We have all the conditions to continue producing so that this sector has enormous potential. Life in Piura changed because of the grapes and they still have much more to give, not only to our region but throughout Peru. We are on the right track. Both Ica and Piura have much in common in grape production," he said.

In turn, the regional governor of Ica, Fernando Cilloniz Benavides, said the United States was the main destination for the Peruvian table grapes, followed by Asia, Hong Kong, as well as several Latin American and Central American countries.
