Nova Scotian company notches another award

Nova Scotia based Haskapa has done it again and was recently presented The Innovation Award from Food in Canada’s 2016 Leadership Awards. This latest recognition follows numerous accolades from government, industry and consumers including 2015’s Taste of Nova Scotia Consumer Choice award for their versatile chutney, recognition from the provincial legislature and the RBC Innovator of the Year award.

The haskap berry is new to Canada and what haskapa is doing with it is garnering attention. The haskap berry looks like an elongated blueberry with a deep indigo colour throughout and researchers have found that it contains high levels of antioxidants and other flavonoids as well as vitamin C and calcium. Best yet, its intense flavor is delicious, with many describing it as a blend of blueberry and raspberry with a hint of blackcurrant. In 2014 haskapa launched North America’s first haskap berry product line, including its award-winning juice, jam and dried berries. The line has since expanded to include haskap maple syrup, additional preserves, and even haskap berry gin, all made by processors in Atlantic Canada.
