Ecuador is the world's largest exporter

Bananas are most popular fruit in the world

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), more than 130 countries in the world currently produce bananas, the most popular fruit and one of the largest crops in the world. 

In 2014 global banana exports amounted to nearly $11 billion dollars, more than half of which corresponded to Latin America and the Caribbean.

Ecuador is the world's largest exporter of bananas and, in Latin America and the Caribbean, it is followed by Costa Rica, Colombia, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Mexico.

The VI International Congress of Banana, which is being held in Miami, USA, and is attended by more than 800 producers, entrepreneurs, and specialists, began on Tuesday.

The forum will last until Friday and it will address the issues currently being faced by the global banana sector.

This issues include market development, import and annual growth, pesticides, banana pests and diseases, and genetic improvements of plants.

The XXI International Meeting of the Association for Research and Integrated Management of Banana and Plantain will be meeting simultaneously.
