China: Vegetable prices finally drop

The downturn trend can finally be seen regarding vegetable prices. The pricegap with that of the same period in previous years starts to narrow within thisweek.

As of March somevegetable prices soared, among which the price of Chinese cabbage, potatoes, melon, garlic and green onions are even higher than those of spring festivalseasons, breaking the price record in the past one or even five years. The goodnews is that the trend of rising vegetable prices has been curbed and started going down as of the beginning of April

Every year in April, Beijing Vegetable supply chain will have two transitions:the vegetable origins will switch from the south to the north, and thevegetable cultivation will be more in the open air than in the greenhouse. The accelerationof this conversion process began to show up in vegetable prices. Recently as vegetablesfrom the northern region start to come to the market, they are becoming less dependenton the vegetable productions of the southern region.  In terms of vegetable price changes, the pricesof non main stream vegetables has started togo down significantly, which will drive the overall vegetable prices into thedownstream channel.
