Taiwan finances production of healthy potatoes, avocados in Honduras

Gustavo Lu, the first secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), presented the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) two disbursements for the production of healthy potatoes and avocados.

The first disbursement amounted to $87,000 to finance a project to reproduce healthy avocado seedlings; the second amount, $489,000 are for a project to breed potato seeds.

The goal of these projects is to improve the competitiveness and productive capacity of avocado and potato crops, while also improving production costs. The avocado project is valued at 33 million lempiras ($ 1.5 million dollars), $976,500 of which will be provided by Taiwan and the remaining $524,500 by the Government.

The program's goal is to produce an average of 35,000 seedlings of avocado per year and increase local production by at least 17 times. The project to breed healthy potato seeds costs more than 117 million lempiras ($ 5.4 million dollars), 3.7 million dollars provided by Taiwan and 1.7 million dollars provided by the Government. This project will last five years, and supply 75% of the demand for certified seed of healthy potatoes needed to produce at least 2,600 tons of potatoes.

These experiences will allow producers to create opportunities for agribusiness, technology management, and strategic alliances in the communities of Intibuca.
