Evaldo Morais, Mata Fresca from Brazil

"It has been a complicated season for our melons"

Season 2015/2016
"Mata Fresca's export season has been finished since the end of February, although some clients had a program, they were forced to stop their shipments due to a bad market mainly from November on this was true for a lot of fruits and bad market. So we can say it was a very complicated season for Brazilian melons, especially due to high volumes requested by the clients and sent by several Brazilian growers. In Mata Fresca's case we only sent the requested volumes and less in some cases when clients asked us to stop their program", explains Evaldo Morais from Mata Fresca a melon producer in Brazil.

Coming season 2016/2017
For Brazilian growers, the big concern is still the climate. “The El Niño causes problems for us. We have already had 5 dry years over here. The result is that the level of our wells is lower. It’s a problem and it’s uncertain what will happen in the near future. We will start discussing volumes for next season (2016/2017) with our clients in August (weeks 33 and 34). The most of our fruits will be sent to export.

Mata Fresca
Mata Fresca was founded in 1997 and is located in the Northeast of Brazil, on the border of the states, Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte in the district of Mata Fresca. “We produce yellow honey dew, Galia, Cantaloupe, Piel de Sapo, orange fresh melons, and watermelons. Export goes mainly to Europe, for example to the UK, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, and Belgium. Our orange flesh variety, which is called Cantaline, is for the domestic market only. There is no demand from Europe for this variety”.

Mata Fresca also invested in innovation. "In 2015 we decided to realize a branding project in order to have the Melão Mossoró brand express what we believe in. Here at Mata Fresca, we nurture the popular culture which is ours; that is the reason why we chose the aesthetic of xylography to represent our brand, Melão Mossoró. With our new visual identity, we wish to introduce the world to the cultural wealth of the Brazilian Northeast and to showcase our region's capacity to produce high-quality fruit.
